Exploring sensation and imagination, a range of playful exercises develop creativity, sensitivity and insight. Different energies and ways of moving and being – from fast and dynamic to slow and meditative – enable discovery of the body as an environment connecting to the greater environment.

IMAGE-LAB 2022: Research lab 4-6 MARCH led by Tess de Quincey

a part of MARCH DANCE
led by Tess de Quincey
FRIDAY 4 – SUNDAY 6 MARCH 2022
Rex Cramphorn Studio, The University of Sydney

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST (EOIs) are invited from professional dancers, interdisciplinary artists and wild cards who would like to attend and contribute to an intensive 3-day masterclass and research lab investigating how the body can be danced by images.

Building on previous laboratories 2012-2017 which were led with Frank van de Ven (Body Weather Amsterdam), Tess will again share with participants new aspects from the legacy of images that were an integral part of BodyWeather training and performances within MAI-JUKU, Min Tanka’s performance group in Japan from 1984-1991.

Images were a key choreographic method for the company. Through the construction of precise and varied environments, infinite layers of relationship were explored through the body and the imagination, enabling physics to meet poetry.

Besides a rigorous introduction to the strategies of the practice and to a rich range of specific images, the workshop will also encourage the development of individual images by participants.

As a culmination to this process, a public SYMPOSIUM on the Sunday will show the images developed during the lab as performances and open up the process to audiences for exchange, feedback and discussion.

This laboratory will be recorded on video, sound and photography. The recorded material may be used by De Quincey Co for potential ongoing research study into BodyWeather processes and potential publicity or broadcast. Participants will be asked to sign a Participant Consent Form.

WORKING HOURS:  It is vital for the process that all participants commit to being present for all working sessions of the lab in preparation for performances in the Symposium. Meanwhile, the studio will be open from 9.30am each day and participants will be encouraged to do their own warm-up prior to the Lab which will start punctually each day at 10am. Working sessions will be Friday & Saturday 10am-5pm and on Sunday 10am-6pm.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST should include a biography and tell us why the lab would be of relevance to your practice. Please email the EOI to info@dequinceyco.net by LATEST 6 FEBRUARY 2022.

All, but particularly regional and international participants are encouraged to send in your EOI earlier than deadline as we realise that you may need early confirmation of your place for the purposes of booking flights and accommodation. If your EOI is accepted, we will notify you that a place is allocated to you and seek a tax-deductible donation of a minimum of $100 to assist us in covering costs and enabling the lab and symposium process to happen.

Please note, we are required to conduct the lab according to NSW Government Health Regulations and will be adhering to all COVID Safety Requirements. It will be a pre-requisite for ALL PARTICIPANTS to provide proof of being double vaccinated.

Please check the COVID-Safety Requirements HERE.

IMPRO-EXCHANGE 2021: Improvisation research lab starts 12 MARCH led by Tess de Quincey

improvisation research lab
led by Tess de Quincey
Fri 12 – Sun 14 MARCH 2021
Rex Cramphorn Studio, The University of Sydney

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST are invited from professional dancers, interdisciplinary artists and wild cards who would like to attend and contribute to this exchange. In curating and leading these labs as an ongoing process linking each year, we would like to work with artists who have a focus on improvisation and who see this intensive research laboratory as an opportunity for professional artistic development. For more about the lab see below under What is Impro-Exchange?

Importantly the focus is on a collective as opposed to an individual function, forwarding a group sensibility but also fierce independence. The aim is to generate a forum for dialogue, exchange and discussion around strategies, processes and potential of improvisation.

On the third day of this lab we plan a one-hour improvisation for audience, inviting feedback. This is an extension of the observation and feedback that is inherent within the planned structure of each lab and which is an integral aspect of BodyWeather, the formative practice underlying the structuring of Impro-Exchange.

It’s vital for the collective process that all participants commit to being present for all working sessions of the lab, ie 10am – 5pm each of the first two days and on the third performance day 10am – 6pm. If your EOI is accepted, your place will first be confirmed once you make a tax-deductible donation of a minimum of $100 to assist us in covering costs and enabling the lab process to happen.

This laboratory will be recorded on video and sound as part of the research Tess de Quincey is doing in her PhD. The recorded material will potentially contribute to a chapter about the process of improvisation on Body Weather practice. Participants will be asked to sign a Participant Consent Form and will have the opportunity to review any quotes or images involving them and to withdraw their consent for the use of that material in the thesis.

I reckon we should put it in as the penultimate para… i.e. after para 4: …enabling the process to happen. Before the last para about the Expressions of Interest.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST should include a biography and tell us why the lab would be of relevance to your practice. If you wish to register early interest, please email the EOI to info@DeQuinceyCo.net  by LATEST Sunday 24 JANUARY 2021.

BodyWeather – about the practice

BodyWeather is a synthesis of Eastern and Western practice and thought that develops grounding, flexibility and sensitivity.

As a broadbased, comprehensive physical training, BodyWeather cultivates a conscious relation to the state of constant change inside and outside the body. The training generally draws from three main areas of the practice which vary between high-energy work and quiet, meditative explorations:-

MB (Mind><Body, Muscles><Bones): a dynamic, rhythmic work-out for strength, flexibility & grounding.

Manipulations: a series of precise forms concerned with stretching and alignment through breath and weight.

Ground Work: a wide variety of exercises to develop sensorial focus, sensitivity, imagination and capacity to respond.
