Image Labs

In 2012, Frank van de Ven & Tess de Quincey started a process of investigation around the nature of the danced image as a international exchange between De Quincey Co and Body Weather Amsterdam. Images were a key choreographic method in Mai-Juku, Min Tanaka’s performance group in Japan, a legacy which Frank and Tess shared from their work there as dancers 1984-1991. Besides introducing new generations to this rigorous and exacting method of practice and providing insights into a rich variety of images, it is also important to encourage participants to ask afresh, what is an image? And to encourage participants to find their own ways to elicit and shape images for use in contemporary performance.

Some of these labs have involved very rich collaborations with academics from The University of Sydney and with Monash University. The masterclasses and research-labs involve artists from different generations, backgrounds, disciplines and traditions and in most instances have culminated in a public symposium so as to share the lab process and the images with audiences, opening an exchange of feedback and discussion between artists and audiences about the nature and experience of a danced image.
