IMPRO-EXCHANGE 2019: 8 - 10 MARCH led by Peter Fraser & Tess de Quincey

improvisation research lab
led by Peter Fraser & Tess de Quincey
8-10 MARCH

at GLEBE TOWN HALL

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST are invited from professional dancers, interdisciplinary artists and wild cards who would like to attend and contribute to this exchange. In curating and leading these labs as an ongoing process linking each year, we would like to work with artists who have a focus on improvisation and who see this intensive research laboratory as an opportunity for professional artistic development. For more about the lab, see HERE under What is Impro-Exchange?

Importantly the focus is on a collective as opposed to an individual function, forwarding a group sensibility but also fierce independence. The aim is to generate a forum for dialogue, exchange and discussion around strategies, processes and potential of improvisation.

On the third day of this lab we plan a one-hour improvisation for audience, inviting feedback. This is an extension of the observation and feedback that is inherent within the planned structure of each lab and which is an integral aspect of BodyWeather, the formative practice underlying the structuring of Impro-Exchange.

It’s vital for the collective process that all participants commit to being present for all working sessions of the lab, ie 10am – 4pm each of the three days. If your EOI is accepted, your place will first be confirmed once you make a tax-deductible donation of a minimum of $100 to assist us in covering costs and enabling the lab process to happen.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST should include a biography and tell us why the lab would be of relevance to your practice. Please email the EOI to info@DeQuinceyCo.net by LATEST Sunday 10 FEBRUARY.

IMPRO-EXCHANGE 2017: 24-26 NOVEMBER led by Frank van de Ven

IMPRO-EXCHANGE 2017
improvisation research lab
led by Frank van de Ven – BODYWEATHER AMSTERDAM

 24-26 NOVEMBER
at UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY and CRITICAL PATH
The Drill, Rushcutters Bay

De Quincey Co is delighted to invite EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST from professional dancers, artists and wild cards to participate in this years IMPRO-EXCHANGE.

These labs are designed to explore the nature of improvisation between dancers and artists from different backgrounds, ages and traditions. Importantly the focus is on a collective as opposed to an individual rationale, forwarding a group sensibility but also fierce independence. The aim is to generate a forum for dialogue, exchange and discussion around strategies and processes of improvisation.

In curating and leading these labs, we would like to work with artists who have a focus on improvisation and who see this context as an opportunity for their professional development.

WHEN:  Friday-Sunday 24-26 November, 10am–4pm all 3 days
WHERE:  Fri 24 Nov at University of Sydney; Sat & Sun 25 & 26 Nov at Critical Path, Rushcutters Bay

INTERNATIONAL 6-DAY MASTERCLASS
A manual of images from BODYWEATHER
led by Frank van de Ven & Tess de Quincey

 27 NOVEMBER – 2 DECEMBER
The University of Sydney

Explore how images arise in and around us, and how the body can be danced by these images and by the imagination!

We’re delighted to announce this new masterclass in a series that has developed over previous exciting laboratories 2011-2015 in Sydney and Melbourne. It is a very special opportunity to work with leading BodyWeather practitioners Frank van de Ven (Amsterdam) and Tess de Quincey (Sydney), who share the legacy of their training within MAI-JUKU, Min Tanaka’s performance group in Japan.

Through the construction of precise and varied environments, infinite layers of relationship are explored through the body and the mind, enabling physics to meet poetry.

Besides a rigorous introduction to this method of practice and a rich variety of images, the workshop will encourage the development of images by each participant for use in contemporary performance.

The process will culminate in a public symposium which will highlight links between performance practice and theory.

WHEN:  Mon 27 Nov 1-5pm; Tue-Sat 29 Nov – 2 Dec 10am-5pm.
WHERE: Rex Cramphorn Studio, The University of Sydney
COST: Early Bird *$350 by 5 NOVEMBER; full price *$550
BOOKINGS: Places are limited and can ONLY be purchased via Eventbrite below

BodyWeather – detailed information about the practice

BodyWeather is a synthesis of Eastern and Western practice and thought that develops grounding, flexibility and sensitivity.

As a broadbased, comprehensive physical training, BodyWeather cultivates a conscious relation to the state of constant change inside and outside the body. The training generally draws from three main areas of the practice which vary between high-energy work and quiet, meditative explorations:-

MB (Muscles><Bones, Mind><Body): dynamic, rhythmic work-out for strength, flexibility & grounding.

Manipulations: a series of precise forms concerned with stretching and alignment.

Ground Work: a wide variety of exercises to develop sensorial focus, sensitivity and scope of expression.
