EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST are invited from professional dancers, interdisciplinary artists and wild cards who would like to attend and contribute to this exchange. In curating and leading these labs as an ongoing process linking each year, we would like to work with artists who have a focus on improvisation and who see this intensive research laboratory as an opportunity for professional artistic development. For more about the lab see below under What is Impro-Exchange?
Importantly the focus is on a collective as opposed to an individual function, forwarding a group sensibility but also fierce independence. The aim is to generate a forum for dialogue, exchange and discussion around strategies, processes and potential of improvisation.
On the third day of this lab we plan a one-hour improvisation for audience, inviting feedback. This is an extension of the observation and feedback that is inherent within the planned structure of each lab and which is an integral aspect of BodyWeather, the formative practice underlying the structuring of Impro-Exchange.
It’s vital for the collective process that all participants commit to being present for all working sessions of the lab, ie 10am – 5pm each of the first two days and on the third performance day 10am – 6pm. If your EOI is accepted, your place will first be confirmed once you make a tax-deductible donation of a minimum of $100 to assist us in covering costs and enabling the lab process to happen.
This laboratory will be recorded on video, sound and photography. The recorded material may be used by De Quincey Co for potential ongoing research study into BodyWeather processes and potential publicity or broadcast. Participants will be asked to sign a Participant Consent Form.

Regional or interstate participants are encouraged to send us your EOI even if Covid restrictions for 12-14 March are as yet unclear.
WHAT IS IMPRO-EXCHANGE?
IMPRO-EXCHANGE is a process of intensive laboratories and public performances which aims to explore the nature of improvisation between dancers and artists from different backgrounds, ages and traditions. It also aims to generate a forum of dialogue, exchange and discussion around strategies and processes of improvisation – for both participants and audiences. Each lab is intricately structured and has a specific focus (eg energy, motif, space, composition) which links and accumulates the experiences of previous labs.
More than three hundred artists from all around Australia and abroad have engaged in this process since inception in 2006, and a pooling of more than fifty dancers regularly participate. The build-up of shared experience that has emerged is a major objective of these labs. Usually each lab culminates in a one hour improvisation for general public, inviting feedback.
Since 2015 these labs have been funded by De Quincey Co as an initiative supporting the development of artists based in BodyWeather and related disciplines. From 2006 to 2014, these labs were partially funded by Critical Path, an organisation dedicated to the development of dance in NSW, and supported by Performance Space in 2010; most recently they have been supported by MARCH DANCE in 2019 and now in 2020.
